NERC is the UK’s main agency for funding and managing research, training and knowledge exchange in the environmental sciences. Two research institutes form the NERC partnership in this proposal: The National Oceanography Centre in Southampton is a multi-disciplinary marine research institute that has an international reputation for excellence in both science and technology. It has a strong track record of working with the EC to deliver projects under the current and previous Framework programmes. NOC has, since 2007, been contracted to deliver 36 FP7 projects with an EC contribution of €12 million, including 13 Environment and 2 Ocean projects as well as being involved in Space, ICT and Infrastructure projects. The Centre has successfully co-ordinated 2 FP7 Environment projects, HERMIONE and EUROSITES.
The British Geological Survey is world-renowned for its geoscience, its well-equipped laboratories and its innovative approach to mission-specific seafloor drilling (as an IODP operator).
